India, with approximately 1.2 billion people is the world's largest democracy. The country is a federation of 28 states, each with their own governments. Jammu and Kashmir – where we are going, is one of them.
India differs considerably from Western norms and values. Something that we don't think about may seem insulting and offensive to the inhabitants of India.
Indians are very hospitable and usually do not tolerate that someone else pays for them in their own country where they are hosting. Do not agree to be offered drinks or food in the street or on the train by someone you do not trust.
When in Rome do as the Romans do. In the mountains, we are dressed as skiers are most, which is fine. In New Delhi (or other big cities), we have the garments westerners tend to have, but if you go to other parts of the country, it is respectful to adjust the outfit slightly after the culture.
The whole India have the same time zone, and is 5.5 hours plus against the GMT. In addition to Urdu the official language is English, and most Indians can be tolerably understood.
In the temple you are expected to take off your shoes, cover legs and leave all of leather, fur and mobiles outside before you enter. Cameras can sometimes be carried into the temple.
You eat with your right hand and break bread with the same. Uou use the left hand in the restroom in India. Right hand is also used when you take someone by the hand and/or surrender money or gifts/products.
Never put one leg over the knee and show the sole of the foot against an Indian and certainly not to a temple or religious picture. It can be regarded as grossly offensive.
