Svalbard and Spitsbergen by boat – sail and ski

Svalbard and Spitsbergen is a magic place with a unique nature and wildlife. You can find Arctic foxes, reindeers and polar bears. In the sea there are whales, dolphins, seals and walruses. A range of beautiful mountains rises out of the sea everwhere around us and offers wonderful opportunities for ski touring.

To really get into the wilderness, we spend the week on the large and comfortable boat. The boat is our floating hotel and takes us into the fjords and the start of our ski tours. A trip closer to nature and its elements than this is hard to imagine.

The boat
See info about the boat in the menu to the right.

Group size
We welcome up to 8 guests at the time on this trip. For up to 6 guests we have one mountain guide, if the group is larger we bring one more guide and divide the guests into 2 groups with 4 skiers in each.

Skills and stamina
This is a challenging ski touring week. It is suitable for skiers who have previous experience of multi-day ski touring and backcountry skiing.
You need to have a good level of fitness and have the skiing ability to cope with variable off-piste snow conditions. You also need to know how to make kick turns in steep terrain.(Please have a look in the meny to the right about "Ski Touring words and terms")

Program for the week
This is a standard program that may have to be adjusted due to snow conditions, tide, weather and wind.

A normal program runs from Saturday to Saturday with 6 days of ski touring. For groups that book a private week we can run a tailor made program.

Day 1
Travel day (usually a Friday, see booking dates to the right)
We meet in Longyearbyen, where we board the Due III, our home for the week. You can check in on the boat from h.15.00
After a briefing from our captain regarding the safety procedures for the boat we cast off and sail out for a week's adventures among the mountains and fjords.

To Longyearbyen there are flights from several airports in Europe. Most of the flights are via Oslo as Svalbard is a part of Norway. You can fly with www.sas.se or www.norwegian.com but also try www.skyscanner.com

Day 2-7
We make different ski tours every day. Which tours we choose depend on several factors. The wind, tides, snow conditions, avalanche danger and off course what you want. Your mountain guide determines the tour for the day in cooperation with the captain. Meanwhile, we are sailing through the fjords and scout for wildlife in the sea and along the beaches.
Anyone who wants to can fish from the boat. If you catch a large one it might go directly into the kitchen and will be part of the evenings fish soup.

Day 8
Travel day. Check out from the boat at h.10
After 6 days of skiing we return to Longyearbyen and fly back home.
